The Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia resigned from his position Personnel changes continue at the Constitutional Court of Armenia. Judge Edgar Shetirian announced his resignation from the position of deputy chairman of the Constitutional Court, and emphasized that he intends to continue working as a judge. "Given the current circumstances, I thought it was not possible to continue to fulfill the duties of the deputy chairman of the Constitutional Court," Shtirian told reporters after the election of the new court chairman. On November 6, a work session of the Constitutional Court was held, where the issue of electing the chairman was discussed. Two judges were nominated for this position: Edgar Styrian and Vladimir Vardanian. Based on the results of the secret ballot, none of the candidates received the required number of votes. In accordance with the procedure stipulated in the law, a second round of voting was held, following which Vladimir Vardanian, who was previously a member of the Civil Contract Party, was elected as the chairman of the Constitutional Court. Referring to the results of the vote, Shtirian noted that the result of today's elections did not surprise him. He also questioned the consistency of what happened with the original goals of the June 2020 constitutional changes. "I will say just one sentence: Is this why the amendment to the constitution was made in June 2020? Personally, I don't want to believe it, but the existing reality forces us to consider them. In other words, after about six and a half years, we are back where we started," said the judge. In response to a question about possible pressure from government officials, Shtirian said that he had not encountered such pressure personally. "I have been working as a judge for more than six years. There has never been, there is and cannot be any pressure regarding my activity and my personality," he emphasized.
