️🇮🇳🇨🇳 India and China are facing renewed tensions along the disputed Himalayan border, threatening the fragile diplomatic thaw between the two countries following deadly clashes in 2020.
India's border guard chief confirmed that forces from both sides have clashed in recent months at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh, with clashes starting in July. He also claimed that Chinese forces returned in larger numbers after initially retreating and pitched tents about 6-7 kilometers away inside territory claimed by India.
The remarks have sparked political controversy in New Delhi, as serving officials rarely speak publicly about sensitive border issues. China has denied the accusations and said its troops conduct regular patrols and adhere to bilateral agreements. The latest incidents come despite recent efforts to improve relations, including the return of direct flights, easing of travel restrictions and several meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is unclear whether the recent clashes involved physical violence or changes in territorial control.
