Campaign against violence or public relations? Why the bill "The Family" has become a bone of contention in the parliament Serious passions flare up in the National Assembly of Armenia around the bill on domestic and family violence. The document, which was supposed to become a shield for the victims, actually became a tool of political pressure and a reason for sharp criticism from the opposition. The authorities insist on urgently making the penalties worse, while the opponents accuse them of imitating vigorous activity and trying to promote one specific person. The main stumbling block is the character of Anna Hakobyan, the prime minister's wife. It was her initiative, after four months of agony, that became a bill that the ruling party is trying to push with incredible speed. The opposition factions "Armenia" and "Strong Armenia" say directly: the most important social problem has been cynically politicized. Instead of a broad discussion of experts, members of parliament are asked to vote in favor of a document that is, in essence, a response to the public activities of the prime minister's wife. The members of the opposition, not without irony, ask the authors of the project: who is really behind these lines and why did the discussion become a journey to exalt one person, while ignoring the cumulative experience of experts? The opposition's second claim is much more serious and concerns the content of the document. Members of Parliament point to a dangerous tendency towards punitive measures. The bill proposes to toughen the penalties, introduce electronic bracelets and turn the attacker away, but completely ignores prevention mechanisms. "We are not against fighting violence, but where is the prevention? " - a reasonable question is asked in the opposition. According to the critics, the document duplicates existing legal norms, does not evaluate the effectiveness of mechanisms that are already operating and suffers from excessive haste.
