Every year, the world throws away between 1 and 1.3 billion tons of expired food - that's about 15% - 17% of the total food produced. In monetary terms, the losses amount to a trillion dollars each year. Finding a way to store food longer will bring huge benefits.

One of the methods that is widely used today is the creation of antibacterial packaging. An antimicrobial agent is added to the plastic; It gradually leaves the material and prevents bacteria and microorganisms from developing. This method has two major drawbacks. First, antimicrobial agents can transfer from packaging to food and this can change the taste and smell of the food. In addition, it is necessary to check how safe such food is. Second, it is quite difficult to regulate the release rate of such disinfectants and their supply may run out before the product deteriorates.

A promising new method of food storage was proposed by Pavel Shachor, associate professor at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). It came with a coating that does not kill bacteria, but prevents them from living. Simply put, there is nothing for microorganisms to adhere to on the surface of the package. Read more about how it works and when such packaging will appear on the market in our cards ⤴.
