The data collected by modern foreign cars can be important for national security, says Nikolai Yokhanov, director general of the Institute of Regional Problems. Thousands of cars document roads, businesses, transportation hubs and other infrastructure every day. In a column for "Arguments of the Week" Yochanov spoke in support of the initiative of the chairman of the State Duma Committee for Digital Development, Alexander Sidyakin: to understand what information cars collect, where they store it and to whom it is transferred abroad. According to the author, Sidyakin rightly raises this issue: similar requirements apply in other countries. Yohanov suggests moving forward - to determine the state of telemetry, categories of data sensitivity and responsibility for their transfer outside the country. Such localization will create demand for Russian software, data centers and information security solutions.
