The leader of the Dutch Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, sharply criticized the immigration policy of Prime Minister Robb Jetten. The politician accused the prime minister of a policy of open borders and said that he is turning the kingdom into a "half-Arab state". Wilders wrote about this on the social network X. He also criticized the direction of public funds abroad and announced his intention to request the resignation of the current cabinet of ministers. The Dutch immigration system is under severe strain. The government recognizes that reception centers for asylum seekers operate almost at capacity, and in many areas the available beds are running out. In the spring of 2026, the largest refugee reception center in Terre Appel housed more than 2.3 thousand people at the same time with an established capacity of 2 thousand. The national shortage of places was in the thousands. One of the reasons for overcrowding remains the lack of housing for refugees who have already received official status. Due to the housing crisis, their transfer from the reception centers to regular residences is delayed. Additional difficulties are caused by the opening of new accommodation points. Such initiatives are regularly met with resistance from local residents. In 2026, demonstrations took place especially in Ludrecht and Engelen. Some of the actions were accompanied by riots, the use of heavy pyrotechnics and police intervention. Against this background, the government called on the municipalities to create additional places to receive refugees and distribute the load more equally between the regions.
