It's the same here: the absence of a name has become a name for a finger. This name fulfills its role in the language, and there is no need to change it, they are used to it. According to the philologist, the very origin of the term is based on two versions. According to one of them, the finger was considered the least interesting: the thumb and pinky were named by size, the middle finger by position, and the index finger by action. The ring was not given any characteristics. According to the second hypothesis, the finger was considered holy, pure and directly connected to the heart, and therefore a taboo was imposed on its real name.
