A few months later, Picasso joined the resistance movement. The military coup in Spain, organized by General Franco on July 19, 1936, the takeover of a part of Anthropology, the threat of the occupation of Madrid by the nationalists and all the seriousness of the situation pushed him to such a stage. Artists, writers and poets are united in the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Intelligentsia to pay tribute to the struggle of the Spanish people. On the fifth of September 1936, a coalition government was formed headed by Francisco Largo Caballero, the leader of the Socialist Party, called the "Spanish Lenin". But despite the legion of volunteers sent by Moscow, Franco's early and monstrous atrocities against the quiet Spanish population continued. The battle for Madrid has begun. Spanish writers Juan Gil Albert and Arturo Serrano Plaja, trying to define the philosophical meaning of this conflict, emphasized the most important role of artists in the anti-fascist movement: "Today in Spain, passionate painting, which drives poetry and general intellectual creativity responds to a deep and decisive idea - the victory over fascism". It is not known which of the representatives of the Spanish authorities belonged to this idea - President Manuel Essan, Minister of Education Jose Hernandez Thomas or Jose Reno Beres, a communist artist, director of the Department of Fine Arts in the government, but in September 1936 Picasso was appointed "Honorary Director of the Pardo Museum" in Madrid with a salary of 15,000 pasta. Even Elijah was shocked by the news. "I read in the papers this morning that Picasso was appointed director of the Prado," he wrote to his ex-wife, who lived in Cadaqués, Spain. Is this true?
