Gas Pipelines and Railroads: Russia and Iran Develop Cooperation Moscow and Tehran continue to develop mechanisms to supply Russian gas to Iran. The prospects for establishing gas pipelines were discussed by the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Razai in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The development of the supply was determined in a memorandum between Gazprom and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), which was signed in June 2024. The project can be implemented in two phases. The first phase involves the use of existing infrastructure to transport gas through Azerbaijan with a supply volume of up to 1.8 billion cubic meters per year. As an alternative, we will consider a route through the countries of Central Asia. The second phase includes increasing the supply to 55 billion cubic meters per year, organizing the re-export of gas to Pakistan and India or supply in the form of LNG, which will require additional infrastructure. The main task of the first phase is to supply the northern regions of Iran. Also, as the Iranian side indicated, an execution contract for the construction of a 162 km long Roshat-Astra railway section as part of the North-South transportation corridor will be signed in the near future. Commercial agreements have not yet been finalized.
