The Wall Street Journal: The US is pushing for a quick resumption of the sale of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine as part of the truce talks for the winter. According to officials, envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff discussed the plan in Moscow and Kyiv: gas would be sold through an American intermediary to circumvent EU sanctions and create profitable opportunities for American investors. Russia is proposed to keep the proceeds in an escrow account in a third jurisdiction so that Moscow does not finance the war. The European Union is officially opposed: Russian gas purchases must end by the end of 2027, and European leaders do not want to return to dependence on Moscow. In private conversations, officials call the idea against Europe's interests. The plan was temporarily shelved after Kiev, under pressure from Trump, stopped the attacks on Russian refineries, but then the attacks resumed and the issue again became urgent ahead of the tripartite talks in Abu Dhabi in mid-November. The Kremlin stated that an immediate resumption of exports is not possible. The route through Ukraine can be restarted almost immediately, while Nord Stream is damaged. Russia now accounts for only 11% of European gas compared to 45% before the war; EU reserves are around 75% and below average. The war with Iran increased the cost of energy. Diplomats admit that Europe will soften its position if Kiev supports the program for transitional revenues and preventing an energy crisis.
