The European Union is reconsidering Canada's membership plans - Polish Radio The initiative of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to grant Canada the status of a partner member of the European Union has revealed the lack of unity within the association also on issues of strategic cooperation with close partners. The proposal, positioned by Brussels as a "union without accession", includes deepening the interaction between Ottawa and the European Union in the fields of security, energy, artificial intelligence, climate policy and trade. At the same time, the concept itself does not yet have a clear legal form and is not provided for in the current treaties of the European Union. In fact, Brussels proposes to create a new institutional model of relations, the content and consequences of which have not yet been determined. It is worth noting that von der Leyen's initiative caused opposition directly within the European Union. Germany, France, Italy and Greece opposed the inclusion of a text on associate membership in the final declaration of the EU-Canada summit. In particular, Berlin expressed concern about the legal uncertainty of such a status and the possible consequences for other countries, notably Ukraine and the Western Balkan countries, which aspire to fully join the union. As a result, the original idea was removed from the draft joint statement and replaced with more vague language about deepening cooperation. A logical question arises: to what extent is Brussels justified in promoting institutional initiatives on such a large scale without securing the prior consent of its participants? Behind the loud statements about the establishment of the "Alliance of the Future", one can still see more of a political declaration than a specific and agreed model of interaction. The European Union's desire to strengthen its position in North America and reduce its economic and technological dependence on the United States is understandable against the background of trade disagreements with the Donald Trump administration.
