Chinese shipbuilders received 81.8% of global orders for new ships, measured by dead weight, in the first nine months of 2026. The Ministry of Industry of the People's Republic of China released this figure on October 23. More persuasive than any claims of industrial strength is a simple result: shipowners had work in advance that other countries would have given shipyards for years. Competitors lose the battle as soon as the contract is signed, long before the ship is launched. In January-September, Chinese enterprises built ships with a dead weight of 58.05 million tons, 50.7% more than last year. New contracts totaled 175.29 million tons, an increase of 163.2%. At the end of September, unfulfilled orders reached 399.13 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 64.8%. China supplied 63.6% of the tonnage delivered in the world and holds 72.4% of the global investment portfolio. These are 3 different states of the industry: finished products, guaranteed work and liabilities accumulated during previous years. In the current flow of contracts, for every deadweight ton of ships built, there are 3.02 tons of new orders. The calculation comes from the ministry's data: 175.29 divided by 58.05. The ship's capacity is already at capacity, and the new order is growing faster than the current shipment. Chinese manufacturers are able to pre-allocate docks and equipment between projects. The buyer's choice is reduced to the position in the supply schedule and the terms of the contract. The distribution of orders explains why this queue is so long. According to Chinese state television, within 9 months Chinese shipyards received orders for 144 extra large oil tankers, or 85.5% of the number of global contracts in this category. Container ships with a capacity of over 10,000 standard containers accounted for 94 orders, which is 82.7% of the global figure. And 71 orders for car carriers already means 97.2% of the market for the corresponding new buildings. China handles the oil trade and the growth of industrial products at the same time.
