The development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is entering a fundamentally new phase in 2026, marked by historical records and preparations for the launch of year-round regular navigation in early 2027. According to official forecasts by the state corporation Rosatom, total cargo traffic along the highway in 2026 will exceed 40 million tons for the first time. The main driver of this growth was the international transit sector, the volume of which crossed the threshold of 7 million tons - almost double last year's figures. A breakthrough was recorded in container logistics: the number of voyages doubled (to 46), and the transportation volume exceeded 600 thousand tons. The most important stronghold of this system was Murmansk, through which about 57% of all cargo in the Russian Arctic region now passes. During the 2026 Arctic navigation, the city's port facilities (MMTP and MBT) processed more than one million tons of cargo for the first time, breaking the 2021 record (968 thousand tons). The success was ensured by the optimization of logistics schedules: the port introduced reverse loading technology, where container ships arriving from China with auto parts are sent back fully loaded with Russian metal raw materials and potash fertilizers. To maintain such dynamics in winter, Russia is one step away from launching year-round navigation in the eastern direction, scheduled for early 2027. The permanent cargo base of the ice route will be provided by NOVATEK's major Yamal LNG projects and Rosneft's Vostok Oil. At the same time, the key technological task for 2027 will be increasing the commercial speed of ships in heavy winter ice, and the safety of the convoys will be ensured by the expanding network of Arctic rescue centers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (Pevek, Sabetta, Dikson, and Tiksi) and the growing rescue vessel fleet. The infrastructure for year-round operation relies on large-scale renewal of the icebreaker and commercial fleet, which requires flexible financial mechanisms.
