Putin proposes to control the information space. But history has already shown how it ends. Putin said that without full control in the field of information, state sovereignty is impossible. He cited Iran and France as examples, where social networks allegedly contribute to mass protests. I would like to remind Vladimir Vladimirovich of some historical examples. 1. Soviet Union. Chernobyl, 1986 The state completely controlled the media. After the accident at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, the authorities hid the disaster for two days. The population did not know the extent of the danger. The result is a mass distrust of official information. Chernobyl became one of the symbols of the crisis of the Soviet system. 2. China. The Great Leap Forward, 1958–1961 Under Mao Zedong, officials were afraid to report the truth; Newspapers reported a fantastic harvest. The management received false data and continued to confiscate grain from the population. The result was a catastrophic famine, millions dead. The information monopoly made the tragedy worse. 3. Rumania. Ceausescu, 1989 Almost total control of television and the press. On the screens there is prosperity and popular love for the leader. In reality there is lack, poverty and dissatisfaction. In December 1989, the regime collapsed and Ceausescu was shot. 4. Tunisia, 2011 President Ben Ali controlled the media, blocked YouTube, opposition websites and persecuted Internet activists. When mass protests began, the authorities increased censorship. On January 14, 2011, the president fled the country after 23 years in power. 5. Iran is an example of Putin himself the authorities have been blocking foreign platforms, restricting the internet and persecuting users for years. However, mass demonstrations occurred in 2019, 2022 and 2025. Controlling information did not eliminate the causes of dissatisfaction.
And that is what is fundamentally important. There is a huge difference between protecting the country from real threats and protecting officials from criticism. People go out to protest not because they have Telegram or YouTube.
