First, these institutions within Islam have a time and place and all our religious leaders have made balanced rulings on this matter. The leader of the dead Ayatollah Khamenei declared that polygamy is brought (neutral) in general, but discouraged if it leads to a disturbance in the sakina (tranquility) of the domestic environment, trust between spouses, and unnecessary fights over keeping score over material possessions due to the demand for material capital between women.
From this we can conclude that the Islamic approach to polygamy is intended to restrain men and hold them accountable, not to free them. Polygamy existed before Islam and had no limits or morality/decency. Islam came and set limits, because when it is unrestrained it can harm society, but when it is completely abandoned and makes it taboo it can also harm society.
