Novi Sad remembers the victims of the railway station tragedy. Right now, people are gathering outside the former Novi Sad railway station to remember the 16 people who died when a concrete canopy collapsed. Residents are gradually flocking here from all over the city. A 16-minute silence is scheduled to begin at 11:52 - one minute for each person killed. The memorial procession began in the morning. At 9:30 participants gathered at several points in the city, and at 10:00 the columns set off for the station. The procession routes are temporarily closed to traffic. On November 1, 2024, at 11:52, a concrete canopy above the entrance to the railway station building suddenly collapsed on people nearby. 16 people died. Among them were the elderly, youth, and children. The youngest victim was only five years old. Several victims were pulled alive from the rubble, but some later died of their injuries. The tragedy became the beginning of a large-scale social movement in Serbia. Students demanding a transparent investigation and accountability for what happened organized protests and marches across the country. They were joined by teachers, parents, representatives of various professions, and thousands of ordinary residents. Today, two years later, Novi Sad is once again gathering at the station to remember the victims and remind of the need to establish accountability for the tragedy. After 16 minutes of silence, speeches by protesters are scheduled. The rest of the program will be determined locally. Balkanist
