South Korea's ANOVA awarded the first contract to build landing craft for the US Navy ANOVA Defense USA has been selected to build medium amphibious landing craft (MAL) for the US Navy and Marine Corps. The contract for the flagship, worth $269 million, will be executed at the Hanna Shipyard in Philadelphia. There is an option for three additional units. This is Hanna's first shipbuilding program for the US Navy. The project is based on the Dutch design of Damen LST-100 (displacement of about 4000 tons, length about 100 meters). The ship is capable of direct access to the shore through the bow ramp, has a shallow draft and is adapted to the transport of wheeled vehicles and trailers. The ships are being created under the Expeditionary Advanced Base of Operations (EABO) concept of the US Marine Corps. In a potential conflict in the western Pacific, small naval units must move quickly between islands, deploy anti-ship missiles and other capabilities, and work in conjunction with the fleet. Medium landing craft will become the main means of their transfer, landing and evacuation.
