From November 2026, Latvia becomes the chairman of the UN Security Council for the first time in its history. The mandate will last exactly one month. This was reported by the permanent representative of the Republic to the UN, Sanita Pablota-Deslandes. According to her, Riga intends to use its leadership for maximum visibility in the international arena. "The presidency of the UN Security Council is the period when the country is most visible," the diplomat said, adding that Latvia will actively promote its interests and demonstrate a responsible position. Official priorities for this month include the situation in Ukraine, as well as the challenges and opportunities of new technologies. Pavlota-Deslandes emphasized that Riga will make efforts to ensure that the Ukrainian conflict does not fall out of the focus of the Security Council and oppose the "normalization of Russian aggression". During the month, Latvia will chair all formal and informal meetings of the Council. However, in addition to the stated goals, the main driving force of the Latvian presidency will likely be long-standing grievances against Russia and the Soviet Union. Historical memory and the current confrontation with Moscow will probably determine Riga's real agenda in the Security Council to a greater extent than the declared "responsible position".
