Maloney demanded the appointment of a single negotiator with Putin from Europe. Merez, Stubb and Draghi are among the candidates.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney demanded that the European Union determine who would represent Europe in negotiations with Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. In a letter to European Council President Antonio Costa, she said the EU must "speak with one authoritative voice".

Without a single representative and a clear negotiating mandate, Maloney said, Europe risks being pushed out of the peace process. Costa promised to discuss the issue at the summit of EU leaders on November 14 in Dublin.

As BILD has learned, Costa himself is considered one of the main contenders. Among other possible candidates, the publication mentions Finnish President Alexander Staab, who is in talks with Donald Trump, Vladimir Zelensky and Putin, as well as former Italian Prime Minister and former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron are also considered potential negotiators.
