The Duma of the Nokotsk urban district of the Irkutsk region decided to contribute to the fight against the dominance of foreign words. Deputies developed a bill according to which municipalities in the region will decide for themselves what to call the head of the local administration: the borrowed foreign word "Mayor" or the local word "Rosh". In the current regional law on local self-government, only the term "mayor" is fixed. In the explanatory note to the document, the authors of the initiative refer to the fact that the state currently has standards for the protection and support of the Russian language, and the federal legislation does not establish a uniform standard for the name of the top official of a municipality. "Giving the opportunity to use the names "mayor" or "head" will allow the municipalities of the Irkutsk region to independently determine the most appropriate option, based on established traditions, the details of the territory and the organizational models of local government. This will help increase the leader's recognition and authority, as well as more accurately reflect his status," the bill's explanation reads. The draft law has already been submitted to the regional legislative assembly.
