Muhammad Atbek, Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade, asked in a letter to Muhammad Reza Aref, the first deputy for medicine, to postpone the implementation of the new vehicle standards for at least one year. Etbek cited "currency problems, emergency conditions in the country and the inability of car manufacturers to invest in the development and redesign of platforms" as the reason for this request. With the implementation of this request, the upgrading of vehicle standards from 85 to 122 items, as well as the plan to upgrade fuel consumption standards, will be postponed for a year and the production of cars will continue with the previous standards. Meanwhile, according to Iranian government officials, substandard cars are one of the most important causes of death for citizens in Iran.
