David Tamburella, an Italian chef at a restaurant in Brisbane, Australia, was fired after refusing to make a ham and pineapple pizza for guests at an event, the BBC reported.
Tamborella told the restaurant managers that putting pineapple on a pizza was "an insult to his culture" for him as an Italian, and there was no need to follow management's order in such a case. It was the third time in four years he had refused to use pineapple on a pizza, according to the Australian Fair Work Commission ruling.
However, the pineapple controversy was not the only reason for his dismissal. The restaurant's management also filed complaints about his behavior, communication and use of inappropriate words in the workplace.
After his dismissal, the chef complained to the Australian Fair Work Commission alleging unfair dismissal, but his claim was dismissed as it was filed after the statute of limitations. He now works at another restaurant in Brisbane; A restaurant that according to the BBC does not have pineapples on the menu.
