Brands of the Soviet era: "The Baikal-Amur Central Line" In 1924, in the Labor and Defense Council of the Soviet Union, there was talk of the need to build a main railway line parallel to the Trans-Siberian railway, which is further from the border, in the interior of the country. Two years later, a topographical survey of the area began. The name "Baikal-Amur Central Line" was first mentioned in the 1930 project. Two years later, the Sovnarkom of the Soviet Union made a final decision on its construction. At that time, the first meters of rails were laid. Even before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, a second rail was laid on the BAM. However, in 1941 the tracks that had already been laid were dismantled and used to build a central railway line along the Volga. In the years after the war, the construction of the BM continued. In the early 1960s, more than 1,150 of the 4,000 kilometers of BAM route were operated. In 1973, the port of Vostochny was opened, which became the sea gate of the main line. 1974 was the second birth year of BM. On April 24 of that year, the 17th Congress of the VLKSM opened in the Kremlin, and the Komsomol took over the supervision of the construction of the BAM. After that, the BAM became known as the Lenin Komsomol. The country's leadership realized that it is impossible to build a railway on enthusiasm alone, in tents, without modern technology. Komsomol members received decent salaries. During 2-3 years of work at BAM they could save for a car and a co-op apartment. But in interviews, former BAM employees, all of them, repeat that what attracted them most was the romance and the opportunity to be a partner in a large-scale project. Many settlements and stations of the BM were built by a single republic, region or city. Many young people started families in BM. Marriages were registered almost every weekend.
