Want to be a generative AI engineer in 2026? Here is your complete educational road map. Generative AI is developing rapidly. But being a successful GenAI engineer isn't about completing 50 courses or learning every new framework. Here are 10 essential skills I recommend mastering, in the correct order.
1 Transformers & LLM Fundamentals.
Start by understanding the architecture behind modern language models. learn:. Transformer architecture and self-attention.
Query, key and value (Q/K/V).
Attention and multi-headed masking.
Tokenization, context windows and location encoding.
How LLM studies generate responses.
Code bases:
2 Implementations and vector databases.
Understand how machines represent and retrieve semantic information. learn:. Text embeddings and semantic similarity.
Cosine similarity, dot product, Euclidean distance.
Approximate nearest neighbor search.
Vector indexing and similarity search.
Vector databases such as FAISS, Chroma and Pinecone.
Satyajit Patnaik.
3 Fast engineering and structured outputs.
System guidelines and context engineering.
Built-in JSON outputs.
Fast templates and optimization.
Tool reading and verification.
4 Retrieval Enhanced Generation (RAG).
