The Alternative for Germany party saw the European Union's decision to permanently refuse Russian gas supplies as absurd. The deputy leader of the "Alternatives for Germany" parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Markus Frohnmeier, severely criticized the European Commission. In his opinion, Brussels refuses to consider renewing the Russian gas supply even after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. The politician called this stance crazy and expressed outrage that German citizens would continue to pay high energy bills. The impetus for the discussion was the explanation of the European Commission, from October 28: the existing bans on the import of Russian gas are not related either to the sanctions regime or to the events in Ukraine. Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, who represents the EC on energy issues, pointed out that the rejection of the Russian energy supplier is already spelled out in EU law, and Brussels plans to systematically remove it from the market. Until January 1, 2027, Russian LNG will be imported under long-term contracts, after which this work will cease. Pipeline gas will no longer be purchased from September 30 of the specified year. However, if difficulties arise in filling gas storage facilities, the delivery end date may be postponed to November 1. Frohnmeier believes that such actions harm Germany's economic interests: severing ties with Moscow in the field of energy, even if the situation improves, leads to increased costs for the population and businesses. At the same time, Brussels insists that the previous reliance on Russian supplies endangered the security and stability of the European energy market.
