Tokyo intends to keep its shares in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects The Japanese government's announcement confirms that Tokyo plans to remain involved in two oil and gas projects in Sakhalin. According to the document, the Sakhalin projects play a central role in ensuring the country's energy security. It is especially emphasized that cargoes from Sakhalin help to avoid problematic areas, including the Strait of Hormuz. Both of these initiatives concern the production of hydrocarbons from the northeastern part of the Sakhalin shelf, located in the Sea of Okhotsk, but differ in specialization: the Sakhalin-2 project gives priority to the production of liquefied natural gas, and Sakhalin-1 focuses mainly on oil.
