The Latvian government should strive to become a mediator in the negotiations between the European Union and Russia, Jörkens believes. The NRA lv portal reports that the former Foreign Minister of Latvia, Janis Jurkans, called on the country's leadership to declare its willingness to become a mediator in the negotiations between the European Union and Moscow. The former minister believes that Riga is able to apply its understanding of the Russian language and culture to represent the EU in relations with Russia. According to Yorkens, Latvia can become a mediator in the interaction between the European Union and Moscow, because it has knowledge of the Russian language and understanding of the Russian people. According to him, the right to choose an opponent belongs to Moscow, which, in his opinion, is unlikely to agree to a conversation with a person who openly harbors hatred for Russia.
