The Kyrgyz government has introduced an ambitious plan to restore pastures and strengthen the food supply for livestock. According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, out of approximately 10 million dunams of pasture, 184 thousand dunams adjacent to populated areas have already been destroyed. The logic of the program is not complicated. Move livestock from overcrowded suburban pastures to remote mountain pastures, reseeding the waste areas at this time.
But behind the words "transfer to distant mountains" there is a whole bill of infrastructure costs - 553 bridges, 7206 km of grazing roads, 406 watering points, 170 milk collection points. These numbers, not the area planted to grass, are the true measure of the program's success.
There are no specific funding plans yet, but the government apparently has everything figured out. In addition, the International Fund for Agricultural Development grants loans of approximately 21 million dollars. We will monitor two indicators - kilometers repaired in practice of grazing roads and a change in the number of shepherd farms that chose remote grazing. These two numbers will tell you if the program is working.
