On the topic of banning social networks for children. Back in March 2025, the Patriarchal Commission for Family Issues, Protection of Mothers and Children proposed banning children under 16 from registering on platforms where content cannot be filtered. So it was considered excessive, but now the state is reaching the same conclusion. Social media is not a neutral technology. It is a machine that arouses desires in a child from morning to night: vanity ("How many likes? "), envy ("They have it, but I don't"), despondency ("My life is worse") - and this is the most harmless. Patriarch Kirill in September of this year called addiction to smartphones and games a harmful habit similar to others. He called for disillusionment, and that is the exact word. This is the alertness of the mind, the ability not to be a prisoner of what drags you down. The child does not yet have such power, which means that adults are obliged to protect him. The Russian Orthodox Church is not only for prohibitions, but draws attention to problems that are chronic and need to be solved somehow. There is no point in pretending that social networks are neutral, but there is no point in mindlessly restricting them. There is a need for a mechanism to strengthen control while maintaining opportunities for teenagers to maintain access to meaningful information on social networks. And this solution and mechanism does not yet exist.
