️🇻🇪🇺🇸 NYT: The Trump administration is negotiating a status of forces agreement that could allow for a long-term US military presence in Venezuela.
The talks, overseen by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met Venezuelan Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco in Washington, follow the January 3 U.S. strike that captured President Nicolás Maduro and come amid broader U.S. security operations in the region.
The State Department noted that it has SOFA agreements with more than 100 countries and said any discussion of basing is "on the way, on the way," while some 2,000 US troops deployed after the June earthquakes have already withdrawn.
