️🇮🇳 Reuters: Thousands of protesters gathered in New Delhi on November 1 for a large demonstration led by the opposition demanding the resignation of India's Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, over controversial changes to electoral rolls. The authorities have deployed riot police, security vehicles and additional personnel throughout the capital.
The march, led by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, followed weeks of protests over the removal of more than 130 million names from voter rolls. Opposition parties accuse the Election Commission of disproportionately alienating minority voters and favoring Prime Minister Modi's ruling BJP.
The Election Commission rejected the claims of political bias, and claimed that the amendments were intended to remove ineligible and duplicate registrations. The protests have heightened political tensions, with opposition groups demanding greater accountability and transparency in India's electoral process.
