️🇾🇪🇺🇳 UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the death of UN human rights worker Mohammed al-Shami in Houthi custody, and called for an immediate, transparent and comprehensive investigation.

Al-Shami has been in custody since June 6, 2024. His family learned of his death more than a month after it occurred, without an explanation of its cause or circumstances. This is the second death of a UN worker in Houthi custody, following the death of a WFP worker in February 2025.

Guterres expressed concern for the 70 detained UN personnel and five former staff members, alongside humanitarian workers and civil society, and demanded their immediate and unconditional release.
