Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, director general of Inter-Services Public Relations, told Reuters in Rawalpindi that the Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement signed Aug. 7 with Saudi Arabia and Turkey does not preclude new members and that Iran could join if it shares a vision of collective deterrence.

He added that Pakistan remains committed to protecting Saudi Arabia and the holy sites of Mecca and Medina, noting that any increase in Pakistani troops will depend on the political leadership of the signatories.
