The Houthi siege of Taiz has entered its tenth day, with growing concerns that the Taiz-Aden closure is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. Beyond transportation disruptions and rising prices, residents face increasing threats to access to water, fuel, healthcare and other essential services. Residents of Taiz relied on Wadi al-Dabab for most of their water supply. With it falling to Houthi control during their assault on Bab al-Mandab weeks earlier, combined with severe shortages even before the siege began, concerns about the affordability of basic necessities begin to spread. The price of a water tanker has already risen from 20,000 to 80,000 Yemeni Riyals in just five days due to rising diesel costs, while the disruption in the disposal of waste in Al-Saleh Gardens has left accumulated garbage on the streets. Hospitals and commercial power generators also face risks from potential fuel shortages.
