οΈπΊπΈπ¨π³πΉπΌ Reuters: The US State Department has described China's naval activity off Taiwan's east coast as "deeply destabilizing", warning that it is increasing regional tensions. The statement followed reports in August of Chinese naval militia vessels in the area.
Officials in Taiwan suspect that China is training for a potential naval blockade using military, paramilitary and civilian vessels. The Taiwan Coast Guard said the vessels involved in the reported incident remained out of restricted waters.
Washington urged Beijing to stop pressuring Taiwan and to have a meaningful dialogue with its democratically elected authorities. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while the US has yet to approve a proposed $14 billion arms sales package to the island.
