Mohammed Dahlan, leader of the Palestinian Democratic Reform Current and a longtime rival of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, strongly condemned Abbas's decision to postpone the Palestinian elections to September 2027.
Dahlan accused Abbas of clinging to power, undermining Palestinian democratic institutions, and making false promises to French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the elections.
"The catastrophic decree issued by Mahmoud Abbas, postponing the elections for the second time, is not merely an administrative or political measure. It is a blatant crime against democracy and against our Palestinian people," Dahlan said.
He accused Abbas and his inner circle of treating Palestinian governing institutions as their private property, and described the leadership as lacking constitutional, legal, and moral legitimacy. "We all know the false promises Abu Mazen made to our friend, French President Emmanuel Macron!" Dahlan added.
Dahlan also accused the Palestinian Authority of widespread corruption and called for a broader political coalition to challenge its leadership.
Dahlan, a former senior PA official currently living in the UAE following a dispute with Abbas, had prepared to run in the elections via a joint electoral list featuring his supporters and figures linked to Hamas. There is speculation that concerns over a potential Fatah defeat contributed to Abbas's decision to postpone the vote.
