The indictment stems from the US government's claim that more than a dozen American citizens were illegally held and tortured in Venezuelan prisons while Maduro presided over a repressive regime, and investigators are also considering charges against other officials.

The couple, who were captured during a US military raid on the presidential palace in Caracas in January, have pleaded not guilty to narcotics terrorism conspiracy and remain in custody without bail in New York.
