The defeat followed Lt. Gen. Tarek Saleh's blitz: pleas for Saudi air cover and US electronic jamming were largely ignored, despite the strait handling about 10 percent of world trade.

The loss cost the Yemeni government about 1,800 square miles of territory, with at least 500 of Saleh's fighters killed and more than 1,500 wounded, while displacement rose to more than 180,000 people.
