️🇮🇶️ An appeal has been submitted to the Korach Court in Baghdad which may compel courts in the Kurdistan region to approve the marriage of nine-year-old girls, when the judges are not allowed to object and are required to sign immediately.
If implemented, it would also allow fathers to petition for custody of children after they turn seven, in contrast to the current personal status law where custody remains primarily with the mother, unless exceptional circumstances apply.
The Kurdistan Region rejected the code, having amended Law 188 in 2008 to prevent child marriage and strengthen women's custody and divorce rights.
