The China-Laos Joint Military Support and Training Center was inaugurated alongside the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy and is intended to support the training of Lao Air Force pilots, according to China's Ministry of Defense.

The base is China's third known overseas military installation after Djibouti in 2017 and the China-Cambodia Joint Support and Training Center in Port Rim in 2025, both of which have raised concern from Washington about Beijing's expanding global military reach.
