The government activated emergency powers, ordering captive coal plants over 50 megawatts to operate at full capacity and sell excess electricity to the grid. Tata Power's 4-GW Gujarat plant has also been commissioned to run at full capacity by December.

India's overnight electricity shortfall reached 7.7 GW this month as a weak El Nino-driven monsoon reduced hydropower while increasing demand for cooling and irrigation.
