The PCG said the Coast Guard vessel was about 36 nautical miles northwest of Kabra Island and did not respond to repeated radio challenges. Later, the Philippine patrol ship followed three Chinese navy warships about 31 nautical miles northwest of the island and rescued them at close distances of 0.74 nautical miles.

The PCG said the Chinese ships were operating within the Philippines' EEZ and assessed that their presence was likely related to Chinese monitoring of a multinational maritime security activity conducted in the West Philippine Sea this week.
