Several prominent Israelis, including former Shin Bet and Mossad directors, called for his release, as did the leader of the IDF team that captured him.

Barghouti's release does not provide him with amnesty or moral absolution for crimes he may have committed. In fact, several human rights organizations say he didn't even get a fair trial. But liberation is necessary to promote peace.
