The amendment will repeal Article 137 of the Lithuanian Constitution. It must still pass two more parliamentary votes, held at least three months apart, with at least 94 of the 141 Seimas members required to approve it each time; The first vote is scheduled for October 6 and the final vote for January 12.

Seimas chairman Juozas Olekas said the change would allow Lithuania to fully participate in NATO's nuclear deterrent system, citing changes in Europe's security environment. The proposal itself does not mean that nuclear weapons will be deployed in Lithuania.
