Deputy Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the move, with the support of Defence Secretary Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, in response to the latest Hamas drone and missile attacks on Riyadh's energy sites and the Red Sea, and to keep vital shipping lanes open amid rising cost-of-living pressures.

Official sources say the limited deployment will last weeks and follows earlier airstrikes by Britain-US against Hamas targets earlier in 2024.
