Reuters interviewed 20 people with an immigrant background in Rostock and Schwerin, most of whom reported experiencing increased abuse against immigrants. Some said they would consider leaving if conditions worsened.

The AfD supports tighter immigration controls and the deportation of people without legal residency, while maintaining a welcome for qualified workers. Economists warn that East Germany's aging population will require a more skilled workforce.
