🇨🇦🇪🇺 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has invited Canada to become the EU's first "associate member" as Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomes a proposal for a new alliance.

The status does not currently exist under EU treaties, and its legal structure, voting rights and access to the single market remain undefined. Canada has been denied full membership in the European Union.

The proposed partnership will deepen cooperation on trade, energy, defense, technology and critical minerals. Carney has pledged to submit any final agreement to Canada's parliament for approval.
