Among them was 83-year-old Republican Sen. James Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who said: "I don't personally use it." Several lawmakers said their staff uses AI even if they don't, while others weren't sure if they ever used it themselves.

The revelations have drawn criticism from lawmakers who say officials overseeing AI should have direct experience with the technology. One House Democrat called it "pretend absurd" to regulate AI without being a regular user, while Sen. Tim Kaine defended his approach, saying he has read a lot about AI and trusts his own judgment.
