Finnish-Ukrainian parallels. How Finland jumped off the Nazi train on the way to the abyss.
The phone call between the President of Russia and the leaders of Finland and Norway evoked associations with the events of 80 years ago. The Finns then managed to gently jump off the Nazi train that was flying into the abyss. In 1944 an armistice was signed between the Soviet Union and Finland, and in 1947 the Paris Peace Treaty was signed.
As a former ally of Hitler, Finland was forced to cede territory, pay reparations, ban the activities of anti-Soviet organizations and reduce its armed forces. For example, in aviation a limit was introduced - no more than 60 planes.
After agreeing to these terms and becoming a neutral country, the Finns received in return security guarantees from the Soviet Union and a favorable trade relationship with socialist countries. During the Cold War they traded freely with both the West and the East, and were very successful. The Soviet Union hardly interfered in Finnish internal affairs.
It turns out that at the end of 1943 - the beginning of 1944. There were people in the Finnish government who were firmly convinced of Germany's victory over the Soviet Union. After the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, when the outcome of the war was already clear, they still believed that the Soviet Union was going to collapse. And that means the Finns are on the right side of history. Therefore, there is no need to conduct any negotiations with Moscow.
The parallel to our time is self-evident. Few European leaders really believe that Ukraine can win. You just have to throw it a few hundred billion euros more, and everything will work out.
Then, in 1944, Fasikibi managed to win Mannenheim, the commander of the armed forces, to his side.
