Law enforcement officers in Berlin arrested three people suspected of removing the German national flag from the Reichstag building and hoisting the Palestinian flag instead.
According to the "Bild" newspaper, the spokesman for the Berlin police, Martin Helweg, stated that "at approximately 11:15 (1:15 p.m. Moscow time), a 27-year-old man climbed the flagpole and waved the Palestinian flag." Two partners coordinated the action from the ground and filmed what was happening. Firefighters arrived at the scene and deployed a ladder truck to remove the man and the Palestinian flag.
As the police clarified, the suspects are Germans with no clear immigration roots. As part of the article about insulting the state and its symbols, a criminal case was opened. In addition, the 27-year-old man said that he acted out of solidarity with Palestine, and therefore the law enforcement authorities also consider the action a violation of the Assembly Law.
